Unite in Action: Support Safety
Location: Millview Elementary School
Date & Time: 1:30PM - 2:30PM, March 30th, 2007
Friday March 30, 2007 was the last day of Youth Violence Prevention Week.
Friday's subject was Unite in Action. Bonnie Hardin and three Peer Support
Workers, Tony Cortes, Cyndia Gray, and Claudia Romero came up with an
event entitled "Support Safety" where students learn first aid techniques
and participate in simulation activities that prepare students to help
others in times of need. Each of the PSWs asked for volunteers to make up
groups of 5 which the children where excited and eager to participate in.
Each group had to act out a scene where someone pretends to get injured.
Some of the scenarios included getting their knee scraped, getting a paper
cut, twisted ankle, blisters on hands, sand in eyes, rug burns, things
that can happen in any ordinary elementary school. After the children were
done acting out their scene, the PSWs would ask what the proper treatment
was for the injury. Children that volunteered or participated got an
eraser or pencil. After their answers, the PSWs let the children know what
the proper indication was. The children seemed to enjoy the assembly;
they were very excited and more than happy to volunteer.
